- US vs Imperial gallons: A US gallon equals 3.785 litres, while an Imperial (UK) gallon equals 4.546 litres. Always verify which gallon is intended — confusing the two introduces a ~20% error.
- Volumetric vs mass flow: These tables cover volumetric flow only. Mass flow conversions require fluid density, which varies with temperature and pressure.
- Temperature dependence: Volumetric flow rates for gases are strongly temperature- and pressure-dependent. The conversion factors here are exact ratios between unit definitions and apply regardless of conditions, but the measured flow itself may need correction to standard conditions (e.g. SCFM at 15.6 °C and 1 atm).
- Precision: Conversion factors are given to the precision typically needed in engineering practice. For metrology or calibration work, use the exact definitions (1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 US gal = 231 in³).
- Common pipeline convention: In oil and gas, barrels per day (bbl/d) is standard: 1 m³/h ≈ 151 bbl/d.
