Atmospheric Layers

The U.S. Standard Atmosphere divides Earth's atmosphere into the following distinct layers based on altitude:

  • Troposphere: 0 to 11 km (0 to 36,000 ft)
  • Stratosphere: 11 to 51 km (36,000 to 167,000 ft)
  • Mesosphere: 51 to 71 km (167,000 to 232,000 ft)
  • Ionosphere: Above 71 km (above 232,000 ft)
