Slope for Self-Cleaning
A pipeline can become self-cleaning under certain conditions. The minimum slope required for self-cleaning of sludge pipelines can be estimated with the following formula:

- = Minimum slope for self-cleaning (m/m)
- = Required shear stress for self-cleaning (kg/m²). Typical values: 0.25 kg/m² for sludge waste water, 0.15 kg/m² for rain water.
- = Density of the fluid (kg/m³)
- = Hydraulic radius at maximum flow (m)
Particle Size & Definitions
- Mesh is defined as the number of openings per inch of a screen. A "100 mesh screen" has 100 openings per inch.
- Particle size is often described by mesh, e.g., "100 mesh powdered sand".
- Slurries with a solid content less than 2% behave hydraulically similar to water.
- For solid contents greater than 2%, friction losses can be 1.5 to 4 times that of water.
