Key Formulas

Unit Conversion

y=xky = x \cdot k

Multiply by conversion factor.

Linear Interpolation

y=y1+(xx1)(y2y1)x2x1y = y_1 + \frac{(x - x_1)(y_2 - y_1)}{x_2 - x_1}

Estimate between two known points.

Percentage

p=partwhole×100%p = \frac{\text{part}}{\text{whole}} \times 100\%

Part as fraction of whole.

Leach Field Sizing

The required leach field area is calculated by dividing the daily wastewater volume by the soil absorption capacity:

A=QCA = \frac{Q}{C}

Where:

  • AA = required leach field area (ft²)
  • QQ = total daily wastewater loading (gallons/24hr)
  • CC = soil absorption capacity (gal/ft²/24hr)

Example: For a single family dwelling with Q=1200Q = 1200 gallons in fine sand soil (C=4C = 4 gal/ft²):

A=12004=300 ft2A = \frac{1200}{4} = 300 \text{ ft}^2

Leach Line Design Guidelines

Parameter Imperial Metric
Maximum length per line 100 ft 30 m
Minimum spacing between lines 10 ft 3 m
Minimum trench depth 12 in 0.3 m
Elevation grade ~1% ~1%

Note: In freezing climates, leach lines must be installed below the frost depth.
