ISO Numbering Convention

ISO standards follow a structured naming format: ISO nnnnn:yyyy: Title

Where:

  • nnnnn = standard number
  • yyyy = year of publication
  • Title = subject description

Regional and national adaptations may prefix the ISO number (e.g., EN ISO for European versions, BS EN ISO for British versions of the European standard).

Example:
ISO IS228-1:2000: Pipe threads where pressure-tight joints are not made on the threads -- Part 1: Dimensions, tolerances and designation

Technical reports and supplementary references use the prefix TR instead of IS.

Standards by Category

ISO standards span a broad range of engineering and technical domains. Key categories include:

Category Examples
Mechanical Machinery, metals
Chemical Coatings, fuels
Construction Building materials, structural elements
Aerospace Aviation components, safety standards
Energy Electrical systems, power generation
Information Technology Data formats, networking protocols
Medical Equipment, quality management
Environment Emission controls, sustainable practices
Quality & Safety Management systems, consumer product safety
