Explosive Limits Fundamentals

For an explosion to occur, three simultaneous conditions must be met:

  • Fuel: A flammable substance (gas or vapor)
  • Oxidizer: Oxygen or air
  • Ignition source: A spark or sufficient heat

The concentration range between the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL/LFL) and the Upper Explosive Limit (UEL/UFL) defines the "flammable range." Mixtures below the LEL are too lean (insufficient fuel), and mixtures above the UEL are too rich (insufficient oxygen) to ignite.
